A London street during the Victorian era
The Victorian era lasted from 1837
to 1901 under the reign of Queen Victoria. The first world’s industrial revolution happened during this period. It brought new markets and prosperity for most social classes. But it also brought chaotic changes as in the towns: poor housing conditions, long working hours, infectious diseases and premature death as this picture shows. Streets were densely populated, There were a majority of deprived people. Charles Dickens lived in a modest family and experienced these conditions, It was a traumatic period of his life and he transposed it in his work.
